Every good neighbourhood has a good shopping strip to match.
North Brighton has two – Martin St and Bay St – and between them, there’s no reason to leave the neighbourhood if you don’t want to.
Martin Street
We’ll start with one of Bayside’s lesser-known strips.
But in our opinion, it might just be the best – it has the village feel, all the essentials and the type of food that people come across the city for.
It’s the kind of strip where you don’t need to order your coffee, because the barista recognises you the moment you walk in.
And we’d know – our office is 100m away, and we don’t have to go far to visit some of our favourite spots in all of Melbourne – here are a few:
- Escargot – Sarah’s favourite patisserie this side of France.
- The Original Greek Fish and Chip Shop – genuinely might be the best gyros we’ve ever eaten.
- Ten Greek Plates – thirteen years in, and as good as it gets for a gathering with family or friends.
- Sons of Mary – the fireplace, great any time of day, and a Monday steak night you’ll rave about.
- Kalm Springs – a wellness space that lives up to its name.
Check out a few of them in Sarah’s video below.
Bay Street
Bay Street marks North Brighton’s southern edge, and it covers the everyday – groceries, the chemist, seriously good coffee, and a cinema four doors from the station.
Here are a few places to start:
- Le Roi – one of the newest arrivals. A wine bar from Pierre, long-time wine expert at France-Soir, who honed his craft with Paul Bocuse.
- Hotel Brighton – the spot for the footy, with a great upstairs function space.
- Palace Brighton Bay – the cinema institution.
- Rocksalt – a Bay Street fixture since 2013 that you can’t fault.
And the essentials are all here too – Coles, Chemist Warehouse, the medical centre, The Farmers Butcher, and the station itself. You can get most of your errands done within a couple of hundred metres’ walk.
The strips are two pages of the story. The full Neighbourhood Guide has the rest – the four pockets and their streets, the dog beach hours, the parking fine print, and the trade-offs nobody mentions at the open home.
One document, free, built to be saved and shared – everything you could need if you’re looking to buy or sell in North Brighton.
